Portage Lake Postcards
Huron River, Portage Lake, postmarked 1946.
Huron River, Near Portage, postmarked 1907. An early card with an undivided back, this era card required the message to be written on the front side—address only on the back. The scene may or may not be an actual image of the Huron River. It was common on postcards of the day to use generic images. You might even find a “Greetings from Pinckney, Michigan” with snow-covered mountains in the background!
The Huron River exits Base Lake on the southwest side, flowing down the southeast side of Portage Lake. There are two canal systems that connect the Huron to Portage Lake, both flowing under McGregor Road from the large basin in the southern end of the lake.
